Tax Evasion Charges Against Amr Diab Dropped
CAIRO, 8 November 2006 — Egyptian tax authorities have decided to halt legal proceedings against celebrated pop star Amr Diab who had been charged with evading paying income tax. The decision came following Diab’s willingness to pay 1.5 million Egyptian pounds to tax authorities.
Earlier this year, tax officials had found that details of income supplied by the pop star did not match their estimates of his income from within the country and abroad. It was then that the tax department filed a criminal case against him.
According to tax department officials, Diab was required to pay 3 million Egyptian pounds in tax and an equal amount in fines. The artist offered to pay 1.5 million Egyptian pounds. This was accepted by the department, which agreed to drop all charges against him, the daily Asharq Al-Awsat reported yesterday.
With a reported $37 million in assets, Diab is considered one of the richest singers of the region.
